Title:  Associate (Scotland)
Division: Finance
Location: London

I wanted to work at a City firm with a strong developing international finance practice. I was particularly attracted to Herbert Smith because of the good split between borrower and bank work and the range of interesting clients.

I joined in September 2006 from McGrigors, my first job after completing the LLB at Glasgow University.

The training and development here is extensive and I attend lectures, presentations workshops and seminars – both internal and external – on a varied range of topics.  In property finance it is important to understand current market movements so we are encouraged to attend presentations and seminars, and feedback to the rest of the group. Associates at all levels are encouraged to contribute to the firm's "know how" and precedent library to help develop knowledge within the firm.

If you have a particular specialty or interest the firm encourages you to develop these and to share them with the team.  Given my background as a Scottish qualified solicitor I was given the opportunity to present to my group on certain peculiarities (and there are many) of financing Scottish property.

I have always been very interested in business development and have been given the opportunity to arrange a number of events - a particular highlight for me was preparing the winning cocktail at the associates’ cocktail making evening!
