I studied Law at the London School of Economics (both undergraduate, LLB and postgraduate, LLM) before joining Herbert Smith as a trainee in February 2004.

Not having a fixed idea of which area to qualify into, I wanted to train in a large, full service, international law firm that would offer a wide career choice. Herbert Smith ticked all the boxes, the interview went well and I liked the people I met.

As a trainee, I thoroughly enjoyed spending six months in the Tokyo office which opened my eyes to work abroad. I spent seven months of 2008 on a client secondment within the M&A team at British American Tobacco PLC, which involved a lot of international travel as BAT operates in pretty much every country in the world. Reflective not only of the modern business environment, but also of Herbert Smith's global reach and reputation, the majority of the work that I have been involved in has had an international aspect.

Being a large international firm of course means that you meet and work alongside people from across the globe, which I find provides an energising working environment. I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of opportunities there are to experience international work and life, whether on a specific deal or through the ever-expanding secondments offered.

For any ambitious lawyer Herbert Smith provides a variety of career options across a range of legal sectors and in various jurisdictions. With readily available ancillary training, from languages to soft-skills, you have the chance to continually develop on both a personal and professional level.
