Title: Professional support lawyer
Division: Dispute resolution
Location: Hong Kong

I joined Herbert Smith as a professional support lawyer (PSL) in their dispute resolution division in 2009, after taking a career break from the law to work in my family business. I had initially trained with Herbert Smith, rotating through contentious and non-contentious seats after studying commerce and law degrees at the University of Melbourne and University of Sydney.

The PSL role attracted me back to Herbert Smith as it is non-fee-earning, yet still provides a focus on dispute resolution work. As well as looking forward to rejoining one of the leading litigation and regulatory teams in Hong Kong, I was also encouraged by the firm's professional yet collegial culture, which I was already familiar with.

Even as a first seat trainee, I was immediately involved in client work with direct client contact.  I enjoyed the level of responsibility I was given and at the same time, the detailed guidance and support I received from my supervisor. My focus in my current role will be working with our PSL team on enhancing the firm's internal know-how and external profile.

Working here has helped me to build an invaluable portfolio of experience, based on exposure to challenging, high profile matters often with cross-border aspects.  The firm also offers a range of other opportunities, such as secondments to clients and flexible work arrangements.

Aside from a fulfilling professional career, I have enjoyed and learnt a lot from working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
