Our culture
At Herbert Smith our culture is truly collegiate, without meaningless hierarchy. This results in a supportive environment that encourages openness and loyalty.
Individualism thrives but is balanced with an atmosphere where teams, rather than individuals, are often singled out for praise on high-profile deals and cases. You’ll find this team spirit evident at all levels from trainees to support staff, associates and partners.
The firm regularly holds "town hall" meetings where senior management discuss various firm-wide issues. Discussion groups are in place for associates, trainees, secretarial staff and support staff, where elected representatives meet regularly with senior management. Representatives in the discussion groups generate input and receive feedback on issues and new initiatives, raise suggestions for change and discuss any other relevant matters. The aim is to develop communication processes and have active consultation across the firm.
Our attitudes are reflected in the people we recruit, who we encourage to be flexible and imaginative in applying the law. We recognise and actively seek to promote originality within team-based practice groups.
