Peter Coney “I have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the firm, not just legal work but marketing and management activities as well”

Training and development

Training and development are a key part of being a Herbert Smith lawyer, which is why we encourage you to think actively about career development, and to "invest in yourself".

Developing your legal skills
All the training and development opportunities we offer are practical, interactive and have been designed specifically for lawyers by experts in the field. The courses are taught in small groups and provide you, where possible, with individual feedback on your performance.

We use a modular training approach that is flexible enough to provide access to the training most relevant to your needs and to develop skills incrementally. Many of the courses offered can be delivered in full and half day options to fit in with your timetable.

Developing your personal skills
At key moments in your career as a mid-level associate and then again as a senior associate you will be invited to a development centre, which will be an opportunity to think about where you are in your career, to consider your strengths and understand the areas you may need to develop in order to progress further.

As a new partner you will be given a tailored induction to ease your transition to partnership. What’s more, we continue to develop your people, business and practice management skills as well as your leadership and business development skills on an ongoing basis.

The global stature of the firm means you'll also receive opportunities for international or client secondments as your career progresses.
